Weiden Lake History

Before it was known as "Weiden Lake", it was known as”Swamp Pond”, before that "Neweiden", and before that,
"Swamp Mills".
Per the SCHS "Observer", "Swamp Mills" was the original name of the post office, but the residents desired a more suitable name.  "Laurel Glen" was rejected by the Post Office department.  Neweiden is the combination of the names of two local families:  Newman and Weiden.

In the book, "The River and the Mountains," by David M. Gold, is a reproduction of a letter written June 1855
by a Swamp Mills teacher. A copy may be found at:
